Houston: West University, Bellaire and The Woodlands

Those wishing to buy a home in Houston, Texas, may want to study a few of the city's neighborhoods and get a sense of the culture before deciding where in the area to settle. Houston is an economically strong city with diverse jobs, so it attracts many different types of residents.

West University

According to HGTV, West University is like a separate town contained within Houston. The neighborhood is home mainly to professionals, either single or with families, giving it an upper-middle class feel. The area is near Rice University, Hermann Park and the city's Museum District. Less than half of the community's original homes remain. While many of the newer residences tend to be priced higher, a great bargain for buyers looking to save in this area is buying and restoring the original homes.

With West University nearby, both students and young professionals enjoy shopping and nightlife in the nearby area of downtown Houston.

Bellaire

Adjacent to West University is Bellaire, legally separate from Houston but still close enough for residents to feel they are living in the city.  According to one real estate source, most of the area's residences are single-family homes built in the 60s and 70s, and many residents' Bellaire homes are the first they have ever owned.

Despite this report, the area has a variety of homes in terms of size and price, which may be suitable for varying residents. As long as home buyers wish to live in the Houston area and have easy access to the city without being located inside it, this neighborhood may be appropriate. According to HGTV, it is a slightly more commercial neighborhood than West University.

The Woodlands

According to one real estate firm, this is the most diversified neighborhood in the city in terms of home styles and prices, with acres of green space and numerous nature trails for residents who do not want to be overwhelmed by an urban lifestyle.

An affluent suburb of Houston, The Woodlands neighborhood hosts outdoor concerts in addition to holding natural attractions. It is about 27 miles north of downtown Houston, and has remained distinctive while surrounding areas have become more fully integrated into the city and lost their individual identity.
